Welcome to Green Valley – the flagship Subsurface Mining and Colonisation Station (Sumac) of ProCorp. 4km beneath the surface of the Southwestern Pacific Ocean, nestled in the marine snow of the abyssal plain. The best known of our Sumacs is a shining pearl in the vast darkness of the sea, and a sanctuary from the harsh living of the land.

Living on the surface has become hard. Depending on where you are in the world, the weather is challenging. In the UK, storms hit almost every month, and the summers are punishing. All the newly formed, post-sea-level rise beaches can’t make up for the searing heat. Prices are astronomical, especially food (although thanks to ProCorp, cheaper fuel for transporting goods has begun to bring prices down once again).

Join Betty and Maia (from the safety of dry land). They should be concentrating on getting along – long enough at least for newbie Maia to finish her orientation, and for Betty to prove her usefulness to those that really matter: the upper classes. But they can’t seem to get a break. Glitches—in a station that runs on perfect operation and harmony—are anathema to old-school Betty, and Maia’s hidden anxiety isn’t helped by erratic sea-life behaviour. Just what is going on, onboard Green Valley? And then, there’s Audley. Sending encrypted files to the surface containing details of an accident that ‘never happened’.
